Best answer to Pawn there. Get some physical therapy. Hamstring curls are actually better isolation on your gleuts but you should not do them without a physical therapist until you knees feel better.

If you have bad knees do NOT do squats. Talk to a doctor about safe exercises that will not damage your body. Losing that chunk on your butt is not worth having knee-pain later in life.

I'm not even sure that squats will get rid of chunk. Squats build muscle. If you are trying to lose fat, do cardio, period, end of story.

Check out this great article on the myth of toning.

Make sure you find cardio that won't hurt your knee. Swimming and biking, are low impact, but I'm no doctor. I can tell you, if it hurts, it's bad.

Try to keep the weight on your heels when you squat and that will take pressure off of your knees. Also, do not let your bent knees extend over your toes.

Walking lunges are good, too, as well as in-line skating.

Hope this helps!

You could do the leg press. I don't know if it would feel better.

I had a dislocated knee cap, and my knee bugs me a lot too... but I was able to do squats on what is called a Smith Rack with very light weight on my shoulders. You can Google for Smith Rack to see a picture, or ask someone at your gym to point it out to you.

The leg press is probably your best bet (this is the one where you lay on your back and push the weights up at an angle on a sled) - or else just stick with the lunges instead.
