How to do dumbbell squats correctly to work butt?

Ella P asked:
When I do dumbbell squats it makes my front thighs ache but not my butt. I am doing them to try to tone up my butt but I am not feeling it work in those muscles. Can anyone give me any tips as to things to look out for? I have my feet about shoulder width apart, work with 5kg weights and squat down to just above 90 degrees with a slight lean forward of the upper body.

try not to lean forwards and put your weight on your butt. i’d also squat a little lower, maybe? good luck.
agreed- you don’t want to lean forward too much. keep your back straight and squat down lower. You’ll feel it. you also may not be using enough weight. I have a strong butt and thighs so I have to up my weights a little when I do squats b/c low weights don’t do anything.
